In preparation for our upcoming road trip, today I asked at a vitamin shop about a supplement that might keep the mosquitoes off me, and it turned into a rather embarrassing experience:
I asked if a "basil" capsule was available, or if the shopkeeper knew what else might act as a repellent. She looked very confused, then said "OH!! You mean 'basil' (pronouncing it like Basil Rathbone, rather than how I'd said it, as the herb)... "Basil, as you said it," she continued, "means 'up the backside' and I thought, 'Well, that's something I hadn't heard before!'" Did she think I was asking for a suppository?! I was mortified! Blushing, I decided I'd wait for my mom to reply to my email inquiry about the vitamin or just buy some Off! Oh my!

haha, I thought basil would end up being the aussie word of the day!
Ok so reading this makes me rethink my plan for when I visit, because my friend and were thinking of driving down the coast toward melbourne/some national parks down there, but it seems like there's so much in and around sydney that we should just stay put. What is your advice?
Its nice to read that you are having so much fun in the former penal colony. It is cold and frigid here for your friends and chums in Boston. The city is a glow with the holiday spirit that I am in the Chrissie spirit as it seems that all gets better for mankind at this time of the year. Anywho we miss you but knowing that SPF-45 is allow you to tan as you bask in the Aussie sunshine as a woman of leisure is heartwarming enough to keep away the cold here. I owe you pictures and Merry Christmas…

So I did a bit of research, and I think that woman was putting you on. I found nothing slangy about the word basil on the web, and the clincher was a Sydney-native fellow I know had never heard of such a thing. Did it sound familiar to your friends at all? It seems suspicious to me....
